Chiropractic is based on the principle that the human organism has an innate power to maintain its own health. From the time you were born, tyour innate intelligence has known exactly how to keep you healthy and alive. It knows how fast your heart should beat, how often your lungs need to breathe, how to digest food and how to eliminate waste. There are millions of details controlled by your innate intelligence to keep your body functioning properly.
That is precisely why chiropractic is concerned with the integrity of the central nervous system. Your nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body. The brain and the spinal cord make up the central nervous system. While the brain is protected by the skull, the spinal cord is more vulnerable, covered by 24 moving vertebrae. Many everyday activities throughout our lives can cause these vertebrae to lose their normal motion or position. Chiropractors call these misalignments, subluxations. The slightest subluxation acts like a short circuit along a wire, causing improper communication of vital nerve impulses from the brain to the organs, cells, and tissues of the body causing dis-ease. The purpose of chiropractic is to correct subluxations by means of a chiropractic adjustment. Thus, the normal nerve function restores itself. This allows the innate healing ability of the body to work at maximum efficiency.
"Intelligence is present everywhere in our bodies...our own inner intelligence is far superior to any we can try to substitute from the outside...The mysterious breakdown of the body's intelligence...may be traceable to a single distortion - a wrong detour..."
Deepak Chopra, M.D.
The causes of subluxations are numerous, and often unavoidable. Physical causes could include the birth process, car accidents, falls, sports injuries, repetitive motions, sedentary lifestyle and improper lifting. Emotional causes of subluxations are grouped under stressful conditions such as loss of job, relationship problems, long commutes, feeling overwhelmed, stressful work environment, financial stress, etc. Chemical causes could include alcohol, drugs (legal or illegal), pollution, and poor diet. These traumas can cause significant tension in all of the muscles of the body as well as subluxations.
Many people think that chiropractic in only helpful for back pain. This misconception is easily understood, after all, chiropractors work primarily on your back. However, ultimately, chiropractic care is about maintaining the health of your entire nervous system, and as you can see, a properly functioning nervous system is crucial for the optimal health of your entire body.
